Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has raised alarm over the reported detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, urging the administration of President Bola Tinubu to provide clarity on the situation.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Atiku said El-Rufai’s health and wellbeing are of “grave concern to his family, friends, and associates.”
He called on the Federal Government to state clearly which agency is responsible for the former governor’s custody, whether it is the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the State Security Service, or any other security institution.
“Secrecy in matters of detention only fuels suspicion. Nigerians deserve transparency,” Atiku warned, stressing that any agency involved must ensure the protection of El-Rufai’s rights, dignity, and access to medical attention, family members, and legal representatives.
He further described reports alleging that El-Rufai suffered a nosebleed while being denied family access as “deeply troubling and unacceptable in a democracy.”
