Atiku defeats Buhari in Imo, polls 334,923 votes

Former Vice president and People’s Democratic Party [PDP] candidate in the presidential election held last Saturday, Atiku has defeated president Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress in Imo state.

A result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission at its office in Owerri showed that Atiku got 334,923 votes to defeat Buhari who garnered 140,463.

The INEC Returning officer in the state, Prof Benjamin Ozumba, who is the vice chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, announced the result on Tuesday morning.

According to the don, a total number of the registered voters were 2, 037, 563 while 585, 741 were accredited for the poll.

According to Ozumba, there were 511, 566 valid votes while 31, 191 votes were rejected.

He said that a total of 542, 777 votes were cast.

Our correspondent observed that while Buhari won in three Local Government Areas, Atiku trounced him in the 24 other LGAs of the state.

Buhari won in Ideato South, Oru East and Nkwerre LGAs.

The governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, the APC governorship candidate in the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma and the Action Alliance governorship candidate in the state, Uche Nwosu hail from the LGA where Okorocha triumphed.
