Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians to see the protection of votes as a fundamental civic responsibility, cautioning that the credibility of the 2027 general elections will largely depend on citizens safeguarding ballots at polling units.

He made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while hosting the Enugu Polling Booths Vanguard for Atiku, a group led by Chief Obodoeze Ocho and committed to promoting ballot integrity.

“They believe that every vote must count in 2027. I fully agree,” Atiku said in a statement on X, adding “Protecting votes at Polling Units is vital for the coming elections.”

Addressing the delegation, Atiku emphasised that public confidence in the electoral process rests on active citizen participation, stating: “Votes will count if they are protected by those who cast them.”

His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are intensifying calls for electoral reforms and improved transparency in preparation for the next general elections.
