ASUU to call off strike in few days – Gbajabiamila

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike would be over in a few days.

According to The Nation, Gbajabiamila said this in a meeting with ASUU’s President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke and the leadership of the union on Monday evening.

Osodeke said if the House had intervened in the manner it has over the matter at the beginning of the problem, the strike would have been over in a matter of days.

The eight-month-old strike of ASUU and their unbending resolve to accept the Federal Government’s offer on their demands made the FG drag the union to court.

A ruling by the National Industrial Court ordered ASUU to return to classes immediately but the unrepentant union appealed the case, requesting a Stay of Execution on the previous order given by NIS at the Court of Appeal.

Still floored, the Court of Appeal upheld the previous order of NIS, ordering the union to resume classes immediately.

However, the union president said they would. review the Court order and make an informed decision after being properly advised by the council.

The house of representatives had wielded into the matter after FG could not strike a deal to make the striking varsity union return to classes.

In the latest development, Gbajabiamila had given an assurance that the issues would be resolved and ASUU will call off its eight- months-long strike in a few days.
