ASUU strike is the most Googled ‘event’ in Nigeria in 2017

This year, the most searched topic was one of the most powerful storms on record, the devastating Hurricane Irma.

This was revealed in Google’s annual list of the most popular searches recently released.

The top trending searches in the U.S. and indeed globally was hurricane Irma. The perennial, University lecturers’ (ASUU strike) strike topped the list in Nigeria.

To determine the most popular trending searches, Google looked at its trillions of queries, filtered out spam and repeats, and identified searches that had the highest uptick in traffic compared with the previous year. It breaks them into categories like news, memes, and recipes (beef stroganoff was a hit).

While Meghan Markle, the American actor who got engaged to Prince Harry, was a popular search topic for actors Globally and in the US, and came second for the most searched person, the late Nigerian actress, Moji Olaiya topped the list in Nigeria, followed by Evance the kidnapper.

Olamide’s Wo, topped the music list in Nigeria while Davido’s Fia and Fall came in close behind.
ASUU Strike was the most searched story in 2017 while the Big Brother Naija reality TV show also found its way onto the list.
