ASUU resumes indefinite strike at Taraba varsity over unpaid salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Taraba State University, Jalingo Chapter, has announced the resumption of its previously suspended indefinite strike action.

The resumption coincides with the beginning of the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Union stated that the move follows the failure of the state government to implement the agreement reached on January 17, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Union’s Chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, and issued to newsmen on Wednesday, the Union noted that key “grey areas” in the agreement remain unaddressed.

“The strike was earlier suspended in good faith to allow the government adequate time to address the agreed issues. However, the government has failed to take concrete and verifiable steps toward fulfilling its obligations,” the statement read.

The reasons for resuming the strike include the absence of a functional pension scheme for the university, the failure to pay backlog of outstanding salaries owed to members, the inability of the government to settle accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the non-implementation of the newly negotiated ASUU-FGN agreement of 2025.

Dr. Mbave emphasized that the delay in addressing these issues has severely affected staff welfare, morale, and the overall functioning of the university system. He added that the union resorted to industrial action as a last resort after dialogue proved unsuccessful.
