Nigerian footballer Asisat Oshoala presented her sixth African Women Footballer of the Year award to President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Lagos on Thursday.

The annual award, conferred by the Confederation of African Football in December, recognizes the continent’s best female football player.

Expressing gratitude, Asisat acknowledged the first couple’s pivotal role in her success at the tournament, citing their support during the World Cup and post-tournament assistance.

She emphasized the importance of the presentation as a token of appreciation for their backing.

”I love to appreciate the President and the First Lady for actually allowing me to present their work to them. Because I feel like during the World Cup tournament, we had a couple of issues.

”They came in to actually help us out and especially monitoring after the tournament, she stretched supportive hand towards the girls.

”If something good is coming out of that team, I think it’s only right for her to be aware and also shown this thing and so she knows that we really do appreciate that support,” she said.

Looking ahead to the African Cup of Nations in January 2024, Asisat expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ potential for total victory.

The 34th edition of AFCON is scheduled to take place in Abidjan from Jan. 13 to Feb. 11, 2024, marking a significant event in African sports.
