Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his belief that Arsenal should be targeting the world’s best players, including Kylian Mbappé. However, Arteta admitted that Mbappé appears destined to join Real Madrid.

Recent reports suggest that Mbappé has informed Paris Saint-Germain of his intention to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, with Real Madrid expected to sign the coveted forward.

When asked about Arsenal’s interest in Mbappé, Arteta stated, “When there is a player of that calibre we always have to be in the conversation. But as you said, it looks in a different way [that Mbappé is joining Madrid].”

Arteta emphasized that he personally may not be involved in the conversations about signing Mbappé until the final stage, suggesting that discussions may involve the technical director and the club owners.

“I am not! Maybe Edu [the technical director] and the owners are, but I am not in those conversations until the last stage.

“Why not? If we want to be the best team, we are going to need the best talent and the best players, that is for sure,” he said.

Considering Arsenal’s financial constraints due to Financial Fair Play rules, Arteta acknowledged the challenges of pursuing a player like Mbappé, whose wage demands could significantly exceed the club’s current structure.

Nevertheless, Arteta highlighted Arsenal’s historical appeal to elite players, stating, “The club we are, I don’t think that has ever been an issue. Everybody wants to play for Arsenal.”

Arsenal had previously attempted to lure Mbappé to north London during Arsene Wenger’s tenure as manager. Wenger revealed that he met with Mbappé when the player was considering extending his contract with AS Monaco in 2016. Despite Arsenal’s interest, Mbappé ultimately chose PSG.

Reflecting on his decision, Mbappé acknowledged meeting Wenger and considering Arsenal as an option. However, he ultimately opted for PSG, citing the club as his main choice.
