ARSONISTS! Gunmen attack Rivers INEC office, destroy sensitive documents, sets it ablaze [Photos]
Gunmen have reportedly burned down the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission in Bori, the headquarters of Khana local government area.
The scene of the incident which happened on Friday was still fresh as the hoodlums left expended bullets fired from their guns and the destroyed sensitive documents meant for the conduct of the local government election.
Bori is the traditional headquarters of the Ogoni ethnic nationality and has a record of electoral violence.
Recall that in 2015, the liaison office of Senator Magnus Abe and INEC office were set ablaze by arsonists.
Confirming the incident, Director of Public Affairs and Civil Education, Mrs. Menney-Amgbare Sarah Hope, said vital documents slated for the conduct of the election were burnt.
She said no life was lost though there were some expended bullets recovered at the scene of the incident.
It was gathered that the scheduled elections have been trailed by accusations and counter-accusations by aspirants of various councillorship positions on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
It was further gathered that some candidates were imposed on the party against its constitution.
However, the All Progressives Congress in the state is boycotting the election because of a case it instituted against the government over the sacking of council chairmen and councillors elected under the APC government.
The APC insisted that the planned election is subjudice to the court case.
