The Nigerian Army has renamed the Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos after the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, in honour of his service and dedication to the nation.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the renaming during a ceremony on Friday, February 28, 2025, describing it as a recognition of Lagbaja’s courage and patriotism.

“This renaming is not just a new title; it represents our respect, gratitude, and recognition for the courage and sacrifices of one of Nigeria’s exceptional military officers, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He praised Lagbaja’s long-standing service in the Nigerian Army, highlighting his role in counterinsurgency, internal security, and peacekeeping operations over three decades.

“By naming it after Lieutenant General Lagbaja, we pay tribute to a leader whose life exemplified courage, discipline, and patriotism,” the governor added. “This move assures all patriots that their sacrifices will always be acknowledged.”

The Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, also spoke at the event, commending Lagbaja’s efforts in improving infrastructure during his time as the Commander of the 9 Brigade in Lagos.

“The cantonment was deemed most befitting to immortalise Lagbaja,” Oluyede said.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja served as Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his death on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56, following an illness. He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu, succeeding Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya.

Lagbaja is remembered for his professionalism and dedication during his 17-month tenure, leaving a lasting legacy within the Nigerian Army.
