The Nigerian Army has denied reports circulating online about an alleged attack on soldiers and civilians in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
The Army stated that the reports are false and are intended to cause fear and confusion among the public.
In a statement released on Thursday, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, said, “The reports have no truth in them and are just fabrications from sympathizers of criminal elements.”
Unuakhalu clarified that there was no attack on soldiers or civilians, despite claims by online sources.
He explained that on October 3, 2023, the headquarters of Isiala Mbano Local Government Area was set on fire by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network. However, no soldiers or civilians were harmed.
Unuakhalu also addressed a similar incident that occurred on October 8, 2024, at the Ehime Mbano LGA secretariat. “The criminals tried to attack the secretariat, but our troops stopped them from entering. The criminals, who fired shots from a distance, had to retreat because of the strong response from our soldiers,” he said.
The Army confirmed that the attackers suffered injuries, as evidenced by bloodstains found along the Ehime Mbano-Oriagwu Road.
Unuakhalu advised the public to ignore the false reports, assuring that the Army remains committed to protecting citizens and public infrastructure. He urged the people of Imo and the South-East region to continue providing security forces with helpful information, which can be reported on the toll-free line *193*.
“The good citizens of the South-East should go about their daily activities without fear, as we are committed to dealing with any criminals who threaten peace and safety,” Unuakhalu added.
