Appeal Court sacks Akwa Ibom rep, orders rerun
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Wednesday, overturned the election victory of Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, who represents Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for Akwa Ibom State.
Ukpong-Udo, a member of the Young Progressives Party, had initially been declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission after a supplementary election.
However, the victory was contested by Glory Edet, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate.
The Akwa Ibom State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, responding to Edet’s challenge, annulled Ukpong-Udo’s victory and ordered a rerun.
Dissatisfied with this decision, Ukpong-Udo sought relief from the Appeal Court to set aside the tribunal’s ruling.
The panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Abba Mohammed, upheld the tribunal’s verdict, thereby confirming the need for a rerun.
The details of whether the rerun applies to the entire federal constituency or specific polling units with inconclusive results remain unclear.
