The Action Peoples Party has expanded its footprint in the House of Representatives with the defection of two sitting lawmakers, marking a notable increase in its legislative strength.
Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, formerly a member of the People’s Democratic Party, alongside Hon. Mathew Nwaogu, who previously belonged to the Labour Party, formally announced their switch to the APP during Tuesday’s plenary session.
In separate letters addressed to the House, the legislators attributed their departure from their former parties to ongoing internal crises, which they said had limited their ability to effectively participate in politics and represent their constituents.
Following their defection, the APP moved quickly to reinforce its structure in the lower chamber by naming Hon. Ugochinyere as the party’s Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives.
Speaking at the plenary, the party’s National Chairman, Barr. Uche Nnadi, welcomed the lawmakers into the APP, describing their move as a courageous decision that would help strengthen democratic ideals and improve representation.
He reiterated the party’s commitment to offering a reliable platform for lawmakers focused on people-centred governance, adding that the new entrants would boost the APP’s legislative relevance and influence within the National Assembly.
The party also reaffirmed its readiness to accommodate leaders with similar values nationwide, stressing its determination to build a strong political movement grounded in accountability, service delivery, and national progress.
