Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu has been appointed secretary of the security committee under the APC Osun campaign council. This is ahead of the state’s governorship election.
According to a list signed and released on Sunday by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, the party will inaugurate the National Campaign Council. Additionally, it will inaugurate its various committees on Tuesday in Abuja.
Kalu’s appointment places him among senior party leaders expected to coordinate security arrangements throughout the campaign. The committee will also support efforts to ensure that the party’s activities remain peaceful before and during the election.
The Deputy Speaker is expected to work with other members of the panel to develop security strategies. The panel will also assess potential risks. Furthermore, they will maintain communication with relevant stakeholders as campaigning intensifies across Osun State.
APC Osun campaign council takes shape
The party also named Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, governors and other senior members among the principal officers. All of these people are members of the National Campaign Council.
Members of the council will coordinate the APC’s mobilisation, logistics and outreach programmes across the state. Its subcommittees will handle different areas of the campaign as the party seeks to strengthen support for its governorship candidate.
The security committee will focus specifically on protecting party members, supporters and campaign venues. It is also expected to promote compliance with security guidelines during rallies and other political activities.
Kalu’s role as secretary will involve supporting the organisation and documentation of the committee’s activities. He will work closely with its leadership.
APC targets Osun governorship seat
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to take place on August 15, 2026. It is one of the major off-cycle elections attracting attention from political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC is expected to intensify its campaigns after the inauguration of the council. Senior party figures will lead mobilisation efforts in different parts of the state.
The party believes a coordinated campaign structure will improve its reach and strengthen cooperation among its leaders, candidates and supporters.
Further details about the security committee’s plans are expected after its inauguration in Abuja.
