A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, George Agbakahi, has said the party is open to former President Goodluck Jonathan contesting the 2027 presidential election, even as the political landscape continues to evolve.
Agbakahi, who also leads the South East Tinubu Support Group, made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday.
While speaking on the dynamics ahead of the 2027 general election, he maintained that the APC is prepared for a competitive race.
“I’ve said it earlier. Politics is very dynamic, and we are looking at a year and a half from today, and we already know that there are about three or four major political parties that will be vying for this presidency,” he said.
“President Jonathan is a good man. He can come to PDP and contest. APC is waiting. Peter Obi is a very good man. He can come to Labour Party or ADC and contest. The same thing is applicable with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.”
Agbakahi emphasized that while the ruling APC remains confident in the track record of President Bola Tinubu, it welcomes a diverse field of contenders in the upcoming election.
“APC is waiting, you know, but you have to understand that in politics, we are talking of the track record of the present commander-in-chief of this great country. He has done a whole lot to improve the well-being of Nigerians. And there are so many variables we have to take into consideration in respect of 2027 general election.”
He further pointed out that it is still uncertain under which parties key political figures may emerge as presidential candidates.
“So that’s why I say it’s too early to tell, President Jonathan, is he coming to PDP, or is he coming to ADC? Peter Obi, is he going to contest under Labour? Or is he going to contest under ADC? The same thing is applicable with Atiku Abubakar.
“But me, as a political analyst, I know very well that in ADC, I don’t think there is any of the presidential hopefuls that will take the candidacy away from Atiku Abubakar. ADC is like Atiku Abubakar’s baby, and he will be the presidential candidate of ADC. Peter Obi definitely may go to LP. The more, the merrier.”
He concluded by encouraging leading opposition figures to enter the race, stressing the APC’s readiness to face any challenger.
“We want Jonathan to come out and contest. We want Peter Obi to come out and contest. We want Atiku to come out and contest. You know, APC is well grounded,” he added.
