The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday defended the demolition of illegal structures across the state, stating that no responsible government can ignore developments that endanger lives, hinder urban growth, and compromise public safety.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the APC said the enforcement of urban planning regulations was essential to maintain order and protect residents from preventable disasters.
Oladejo explained that the demolition exercise followed a lawful and transparent process, with several warnings and stakeholder engagements carried out before enforcement began. He described the operation as a preventive effort rather than an act of insensitivity.
“Every measure taken by this government has been guided by due process and the public interest. Lagos cannot afford to allow illegal developments to thrive, especially when they endanger infrastructure, waterways, and the environment,” Oladejo said.
He added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration had shown “restraint and compassion” by offering multiple extensions and consulting with affected parties before any demolition was executed.
According to him, the ongoing enforcement aligns with the state’s broader vision of urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and the creation of safe, orderly communities.
Oladejo also dismissed claims that the demolitions were politically driven, cautioning against misrepresenting the exercise for partisan gains.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagos will not be lectured on governance by those who fail to understand that development requires discipline, consistency, and respect for the rule of law,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and strict compliance with planning laws, which he said are critical to Lagos’ transformation into a liveable and resilient megacity.
“Lagos will continue to uphold lawful governance, ensure strategic urban renewal, and demonstrate genuine compassion,” Oladejo added.
He clarified that the ongoing operations were not punitive, but part of a deliberate effort to ensure the city grows in accordance with approved development plans and environmental standards, while prioritising the safety, dignity, and long-term prosperity of all residents.
