The All Progressives Congress has officially informed the Edo State House of Assembly that it now holds the majority after four lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party switched to the party.

On Tuesday, the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, confirmed that he had received a letter from the APC notifying the Assembly of the new majority status. Although the letter was not made public, it signaled a major political shift in the House.

The PDP lawmakers who defected to the APC are Donald Okugbe of Akoko Edo Constituency II, Bright Iyamu of Orhionmwon South Constituency II, Richard Edosa of Oredo West Constituency, and Sunday Ojezele of Esan South East. With their defection, the APC now has 13 members, while the PDP has 11. The Labour Party also lost its only representative to the APC, further strengthening the party’s numbers.

The letter from the APC, titled “Notification of APC Majority Status in the Edo State House of Assembly,” officially declared that the party now has the most lawmakers in the House. It also hinted that the APC would soon take further steps based on its new strength.

Confirming the development, Speaker Agbebaku said the letter confirms that the APC now has a majority in the House. He wished the defected lawmakers well and expressed his hopes for their success in their new political journey.

The Speaker also stated that he was expecting another letter from the APC, which would nominate its principal officers, signaling upcoming changes in the House leadership.
