Anxiety as soldier kills customs officer at Seme border
Pandemonium erupted at Seme, the border town that separates Lagos from Benin Republic, after a Nigerian soldier allegedly shot a Customs officer to death.
Tribune reported that the cause of the shooting was not immediately known.
An eyewitness, however, disclosed that the military officer was under the influence of alcohol when he pulled the trigger, causing tensions in the area.
“The soldier was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol because no one expected him to behave in such a strange manner,” the witness said.
Confirming the report, the spokesman of the Seme Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hussain Abdullahi, refused to reveal the identity of the deceased Customs office but noted that the matter is currently under investigation.
He said: “Yes, there was a shooting in the early hours of today from military personnel, and a Customs officer was killed in the process. Investigations are currently ongoing between the NCS and the Nigerian Army. The Nigerian Army has been fully briefed and investigations are currently ongoing.”
