The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver involved in the crash that injured world boxing champion Anthony Joshua and claimed two lives on Monday.

Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi disclosed this in a statement on Thursday. “The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.

The accident occurred around 11 am at Danco along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua’s Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN collided with a stationary truck.

The two foreign nationals who died in the crash have been identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen.

In a related development, the Lagos and Ogun state governments announced Joshua’s discharge from the hospital in a joint statement on Wednesday.

Signed by Ogun Governor’s Special Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, and Lagos Information Commissioner, Gbenga Omotosho, the statement confirmed the boxer was released from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors certified him “clinically fit to continue his recuperation from home.”

The statement revealed that Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects to his late friends, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation.

The two governments again commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as “painful and deeply unfortunate.” They prayed for divine comfort for the bereaved.

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos expressed gratitude for the public’s concern and prayers. They also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his “fatherly support” and commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism.
