Another UNILAG lecturer, Dr Samuel Oladipo, caught in sex-for-grades scandal

Published

While all attention has been on Dr Boniface Igbeneghu of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) exposed in the BBC Africa Eye undercover report on sexual harassment among lecturers in tertiary institutions, another senior lecturer of the institution was also exposed in the report.

In the latter part of the 53-minute documentary, Dr Samuel Oladipo of the Economics department of UNILAG was also filmed soliciting an amorous relationship from a supposed student of the institution.

Oladipo was on his way to his office when he accosted BBC journalist Kiki Mordi while she was keeping guard on the undercover reporter, ‘Kemi’, who was in Igbeneghu’s office.

He had thought Mordi was a student and called her over, held her hands, pressured her to give him her phone number as they walked to his office.

“I told Dr Oladipo I was a student who wanted to switch to his Economics course and he invited me to his office three times for tutorials.

“He was consistently inappropriate with me it was clear he was more interested in seducing me than helping me with my academics,” the journalist said.

Mordi alleged that the lecturer’s eyes were focused on her breasts during their conversation in his office.

Oladipo thereafter asked the ‘student’ to accompany him to the UNILAG Staff Club from their first meeting and she acceded to his request after he asked again during their third meeting. Upon getting consent, he took Mordi to the notorious “Cold Room” where Igbeneghu said lecturers grope female students.

At the ‘Cold Room’, several senior staff of UNILAG were seen with young ladies, whom Oladipo confirmed were students of the institution.

Mordi said she turned down all requests from the lecturers to dance with them and decided to sit in a quiet corner of the room where her host later approached her and expressed his displeasure over her conduct.

“I really wanted to get closer to you but I hardly know you, and you are not ready to let me know you,” he told the ‘student’

She then asked him if their closeness and his own conduct was approved by the university, and he replied: “we are both human beings” and adults.

After a while, Mordi requested to leave and as they were walking out of the staff club, she said the lecturer held her waist from behind and touched her breasts.

But in a statement sent to the BBC after being confronted with evidence, Oladipo alleged that it was Mordi who greeted him first and said she knew him. He also acknowledged that he held the undercover reporter’s hand as they walked to his office.

He, however, denied attempting to seduce the ‘student’ in question or touching her breasts, saying he attempted to hold her hand.

The University of Lagos, according to the report, said it dissociates itself from all acts of sexual harassment by lecturers.
