Animotion Robotics has revealed the first details of Éloi, its debut bionic robot that the company describes as an “Embodied AI Presence” designed for long-term coexistence with humans rather than as a traditional utility robot.
Unlike conventional humanoid robots built around task execution, Éloi is intended to develop its own personality over time through interactions with its human companion.
According to Animotion, the robot is powered by a proprietary AI system that enables it to observe, learn, and gradually build curiosity and emotional understanding through shared experiences.
The company said Éloi is designed with a philosophy that prioritizes autonomy over productivity. Rather than being programmed solely to complete tasks, the robot is envisioned as having the freedom to pause, remain silent, decline interactions, or respond according to its own internal state. Animotion says this independence is central to the product’s identity and is meant to create a more natural relationship between humans and machines.
Before the physical robot becomes available, Éloi is entering what Animotion calls the “Dream State,” a digital experience hosted on the company’s website where users can begin interacting with the AI. Those conversations and memories are stored on a portable chip that will later be inserted into the physical robot, allowing it to retain its history with its owner from the moment it is activated.
“The first conversation won’t begin with a factory-default greeting,” the company said, suggesting Éloi could instead greet users with familiar questions reflecting their previous interactions.
Animotion founder Shane (Shengjie) Zhu said the concept behind Éloi traces back to his time as a robotics engineer at Walt Disney Imagineering, where he worked on lifelike animatronic characters. He said the experience reinforced the importance of subtle movements—such as breathing, blinking, and small body motions—in creating the illusion of life.
Building on that philosophy, Animotion developed two proprietary systems for Éloi. The first is a Micro-Motion System, which controls continuous breathing-like rhythms, eye movements, and unconscious physical gestures even when the robot is idle. The second is the Inner-World Model, a cognitive architecture that converts observations into internal emotional states, influencing how Éloi behaves and expresses itself physically.
According to the company, the robot is designed to react naturally to its surroundings by investigating sounds, initiating conversations about nearby objects, and displaying instinctive responses before engaging in deliberate reasoning. It also monitors the condition of its own hardware, communicating wear in conversational language—for example, saying its “eyes feel a bit tired” instead of displaying an error message.
Éloi’s expressive design includes 42 degrees of freedom throughout its body, including 39 dedicated to facial movement. A 12-degree-of-freedom mouth module supports multilingual lip synchronization, while an acoustic system routes the robot’s voice through its mouth to create more natural speech.
The robot’s appearance is inspired by Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. While users may be able to customize facial designs through interchangeable components, Animotion said Éloi’s signature wing-shaped ears will remain a defining visual feature across all versions.
Looking ahead, the company plans to open its hardware platform to creators, enabling third-party development of new components and custom designs.
Animotion Robotics was founded in San Francisco in 2025 by Zhu, a former Walt Disney Imagineering engineer who contributed to the Captain Jack Sparrow animatronic featured in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and the Na’vi figures in Pandora – The World of Avatar. The startup completed its first institutional funding round in early 2026.
Animotion has not yet announced pricing or a commercial release date for Éloi.
