The Anambra State Government has announced plans to build a second airport in the state, with the project expected to take off at Ndikelionwu in Orumba North Local Government Area.
The proposed airport is designed to go beyond aviation services, combining commercial, residential, and logistics facilities into what officials describe as a full aerotropolis.
Managing Director of Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport, Engr. Martins Emeka Nwafor, who also chairs the newly constituted Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, said the initiative was aimed at unlocking new economic opportunities.
“This will be by combining the aviation infrastructure with surrounding commercial, residential and logistics facilities to create a dynamic airport-driven city,” Nwafor explained during a site tour.
According to him, siting multiple airports in the state would encourage industrialisation and strengthen overall development. “Having multiple airports in the state will give room for industrialisation and overall development of the state,” he added.
Community leaders in Ndikelionwu praised the government’s decision, stressing that it would bring jobs and economic transformation to their people. Former President-General of Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, Hon. Fabian Nwosu, described it as a “life-changing project,” while the Vice President of the town, Hon. Ifesinachi Chukwurah Onwurah, pledged full cooperation.
They assured the government of their support, promising security and assistance to ensure the project is completed smoothly.
The delegation at the inspection also included Prof. Charles O. Ofoegbu, MD/CEO of Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited; SSA to the Governor on Security, Retired Air Vice Marshall Ben Chiobi; architect and Sliding Towers founder, Mr. Chukwudi Ezenwa; as well as community chiefs and elders.
