The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade has sealed an illegal factory producing fake disinfectants and soaps in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The raid took place early Tuesday at 14, Chris Ugoezu Street, where officers uncovered a large illegal setup making unapproved household products.
Speaking to journalists in Onitsha on Wednesday, the Managing Director of the OCHA Brigade, Celestine Anere, said the factory was operating without any licenses and was using unlabelled chemicals, manual-mixing tools, and fake packaging materials.
“This is not just illegal—it is a direct threat to public health,” Anere said. “We uncovered thousands of fake liquid disinfectants and soaps being prepared for unsuspecting members of the public. None of the items were approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.”
Anere said the raid was part of a bigger plan to remove dangerous and unregulated products from the state. He warned that the government would not tolerate any business that puts people’s lives at risk.
“The federal and state governments have zero tolerance for this kind of criminality and will not hesitate to prosecute anyone endangering lives,” he said.
He added that some suspects were arrested during the operation and are being questioned, while others who ran away are being tracked by security agencies. The fake products have been seized and will be properly destroyed.
Residents of the area expressed shock at the discovery. One neighbour, Ikechukwu Ukatwu, said, “We never suspected anything like this. The person running the factory barely spoke to anyone and kept to himself.”
Another resident, Amarachi Deborah, said, “The operations were well-hidden and very discreet. Nobody knew such a thing was happening here.”
Anere called on members of the public to report any suspicious business activities in their communities to help the government keep Anambra safe.
“This raid shows that the Anambra State Government is serious about enforcing health and safety laws,” he added.
