A church member, James Louise Okoye, caused a stir after a viral video showed him publicly renouncing his Christianity at the Nnewi Catholic Diocese Cathedral in Anambra State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during the dedication ceremony of the cathedral. In the video, Okoye is heard shouting and protesting the church’s failure to acknowledge the late former senator, Ifeanyi Ubah, during prayers for the departed.
He repeatedly screamed the politician’s name, declaring, “My last day as a Christian. My last day as a Christian is today.”
Okoye questioned why Ubah, whom he said played a crucial role in supporting the cathedral’s construction before his death, was not mentioned when the congregation prayed for the souls of the faithful departed. He challenged those present, asking, “Did you hear them say, may the soul of Ifeanyi Ubah rest in peace?”
Ifeanyi Ubah, a prominent businessman, philanthropist, and founder of Capital Oil and Gas, represented Anambra South in the Senate from 2019 until his death on July 26, 2024. He was from Nnewi, the same community where the cathedral is located.
