The Anambra State Government, through the Idemili-South Local Government Authority, has taken full responsibility for the medical bills of victims injured during a recent shooting incident in Ojoto, despite what it described as attempts by some skit makers and content creators to misrepresent the government’s actions.

The incident, which occurred during a police operation led by the Udo Ga Chi security team in pursuit of a suspected criminal, left several residents injured, including a newborn baby.

In the aftermath, a content creator had visited some of the victims at Immaculate Heart Hospital, Nkpor, and shared a video online, calling on the Udo Ga Chi team to urgently cover the victims’ hospital bills and ensure proper medical care.

However, in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent, the Chairman of Idemili-South Local Government Area, Dr. Amaka Obi, clarified that the state had already intervened and covered all medical expenses for the victims.

She added that she personally ensured they received comprehensive treatment.

“I saw to it that all the victims got adequate medical attention, and the government paid all the hospital bills. This was done long before the video circulated online, which seems intended to portray the government in a negative light,” Dr. Obi stated.

The LGA boss confirmed that all the victims, including the affected newborn, have since been discharged from the hospital after responding well to treatment. “The baby is doing fine now, as confirmed by the attending doctor,” she added.

Dr. Obi also revealed that the police officers involved in the indiscriminate shooting, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Nnobi Police Division, have been taken into custody pending further investigation.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” she stressed that justice would be served, and assured residents that the government remains committed to the safety and welfare of its people.

She further urged content creators and online influencers to verify facts before spreading information capable of inciting panic or misrepresenting the efforts of the government.
