The Anambra State Government has banned the use of mobile phones by students in all secondary schools across the state.

According to the PUNCH, the Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, made this known during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka on Friday.

According to Ikediugwu, principals and teachers have been directed to confiscate mobile phones found in the possession of students during school hours, as the increasing use of phones has become a major distraction to learning.

“I am authorising principals and teachers to seize phones from students who come to school with them so that we can ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without the interference of phones,” she said.

She further noted that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration is making significant investments in education, with a strong focus on promoting academic excellence and instilling discipline among students.

Beyond the ban on phones, Ikediugwu also used the occasion to highlight the importance of Igbo culture, describing it as a rich heritage that must be preserved.

“Igbo culture extends beyond clothing and dancing, as the Igbos are also known for their honesty, truthfulness, hard work, respect for elders, and many other admirable qualities,” she said.

She stressed the need to continuously educate students on the values and norms of Ndigbo, ensuring that cultural heritage remains a fundamental part of their upbringing.
