Tobi Amusan 100m hurdles title hopes received a major boost on Thursday after the Nigerian delivered a dominant performance to qualify for the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
According to Vanguard, the former world champion crossed the finish line in 12.19 seconds, comfortably defeating her rivals and strengthening her position as one of the leading contenders for gold.
South Africa’s Marione Fourie finished second in 12.50 seconds, while Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill placed third with a time of 12.69 seconds. Amusan appeared in complete control throughout the race and pulled away from the field after clearing the opening hurdles.
Although her time was the fastest ever recorded in the women’s event at the Commonwealth Games, it will not enter the record books because of the wind reading.
Amusan 100m hurdles time ruled wind-assisted
Officials recorded a +3.8 metres-per-second tailwind during the race, exceeding the legal limit of +2.0m/s required for record recognition.
The strong wind means Amusan’s 12.19-second performance cannot replace the existing Commonwealth Games record. However, the time still highlighted her form ahead of the final scheduled for later on Thursday.
The Nigerian barely appeared troubled as she maintained her rhythm over the barriers and opened a clear advantage before reaching the finish line.
Her performance also sent a warning to other finalists as she continues her push for another major international title.
Nigerian eyes another Commonwealth title
Amusan entered the competition as one of Team Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects following her success at previous international championships.
Victory in the final would add another Commonwealth women’s 100m hurdles title to her achievements and further strengthen her reputation among the world’s leading sprint hurdlers.
The Nigerian won the event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast before successfully defending her title in Birmingham four years later.
A third consecutive triumph would place her among the most successful athletes in the history of the event.
Team Nigeria continues strong Glasgow campaign
Amusan’s qualification also continued Nigeria’s encouraging performance at the Glasgow Games.
Nigerian athletes have delivered medals and record-breaking displays across athletics, Para athletics and weightlifting as the competition enters its decisive stages.
Attention will now turn to the women’s 100m hurdles final, where Amusan will attempt to convert her dominant qualifying performance into another gold medal for Nigeria.
