The Osun State Amotekun Corps has rescued a truck driver, identified as Jimoh, from armed robbers who tried to hijack his vehicle while he was transporting iron rods to Osogbo from Sagamu, Ogun State.

The rescue was confirmed on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu, in a statement.

According to the statement, the attack happened around 1:00 a.m. on Monday when the robbers began trailing the truck from Ikire in a Toyota Corolla.

“When the truck got to the Bisi Akande Bridge in Gbongan, the robbers — four men — stopped it. They pretended to be task force officers and asked the driver for a waybill,” Idowu said.

He added that the driver quickly noticed that something was wrong. During the struggle, the robbers took the phone of the apprentice travelling with Jimoh and tried to snatch the driver’s phone as well.

“The driver managed to push the robbers and the apprentice into a bush during the struggle,” Idowu added. “He then began to shout for help and ran into the bush to hide.”

While in hiding, Jimoh called his boss, who immediately informed the Osun Amotekun Corps Commander, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele.

Amotekun operatives in Ayedaade Local Government Area quickly responded. “Our men rushed to the scene, rescued the driver and his apprentice, and secured the 40 tons of iron rods, which are valued at N50 million,” Idowu stated.
