Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode has inaugurated the board of the Neighbourhood Corps Agency which will complement the work of the Police and other security agencies in safeguarding Lagos communities through intelligence gathering.
The move comes barely four months after the Neighbourhood Safety Agency Bill was signed into Law. According to the governor, the new agency was part of efforts to institutionalise and deepen community policing in the state.
While inaugurating the board of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency on Wednesday, Ambode said the move was in line with his administration’s commitment to the safety of lives and properties of Lagosians.
“The initiative of safe guarding our communities through community policing is a demonstration of promise kept to all citizens,” he said. “Security is everyone’s business and its better guaranteed when we all take responsibility for our immediate environment.”
In October at the 3rd Quarter 2016 Town Hall Meeting in Lagos, Ambode had said the neighbourhood Safety Agency Bill, which he signed into Law on August 15, 2016, was part of efforts to institutionalise and deepen community policing in the state.
He had promised to raise 5,000 neighbourhood watchers to strengthen security across the state.
He also said that the new recruits would earn at least N25,000 monthly, along with other allowances.
