Former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Sam Amadi, has described the prospect of the All Progressives Congress, APC, governing Nigeria for 16 consecutive years as “large-scale foolishness.”

Amadi’s position is based on the possibility of the ruling party extending its stay in power beyond the eight years it spent under former President Muhammadu Buhari and another potential eight years under President Bola Tinubu.

In a post on X on Monday, the former NERC chairman questioned the political calculation behind allowing the APC to retain the presidency for such an extended period, arguing that an uninterrupted 16-year rule would raise serious questions about Nigeria’s electoral choices.

According to him, the APC first governed the country for eight years under Buhari before Tinubu emerged as president in 2023, with the party now seeking to maintain its grip on the presidency beyond the 2027 general election.

“The party that gave us Buhari for eight years wants to give us Tinubu for eight years.

“If it works, it shows large-scale foolishness or a terrible election political economy, as The Economist hinted,” he said.

Amadi’s comments come against the backdrop of intensifying political activities ahead of the 2027 general election, with the APC seeking to retain the presidency and extend its period in control of the Federal Government. The development has also renewed debate over the performance of successive administrations and the willingness of voters to retain the same political party in power for an extended period.
