All members of the House of Representatives from Delta State elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress.
The development was formally announced during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
The mass defection follows similar moves by former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the incumbent Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who both recently left the PDP for the APC. Their switch in allegiance was made public during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Asaba, the state capital.
In response to the trend, Ikenga Ugochinyere, a House of Representatives member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State, had earlier revealed that two more governors and 40 federal lawmakers from the PDP are also expected to defect to the ruling party.
Despite the wave of defections, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed optimism about the PDP’s future. He insisted the party would undergo necessary reforms and reposition itself. According to him, “Those who want to defect are free to leave.”
