Governor Hyacinth Alia has strongly denounced the deadly attack carried out by suspected terrorists in Akpete and Asaba communities located in Ojantele Ward of Apa Local Government Area.
The condemnation was made public in a statement issued on Saturday in Makurdi by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Tersoo Kula.
Alia expressed profound sadness over reports that the assailants ambushed innocent farmers from the two communities while they were returning from their cashew farms.
According to the governor, the brutal assault resulted in the loss of lives, left six people missing, and led to the abduction of a young girl.
He described the incident as a reprehensible act of terrorism and a disturbing reflection of the security threats facing peaceful farming communities across the state.
“How can you come in and attack a people who were simply pursuing their legitimate means of livelihood?
“My people are hard-working farmers and do not deserve such a cruel fate. I condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms.
“The killing of innocent Benue citizens going about their daily farm work is an assault on our shared humanity and will not be tolerated,” he said.
The governor also extended his condolences to the Apa Local Government Council, the affected communities, and families who lost loved ones in the attack, assuring them of the state government’s support during the difficult period.
Alia further revealed that he had instructed security agencies to step up operations in the area to track down those responsible for the attack, rescue the abducted girl, and locate the individuals still unaccounted for.
He emphasised that the government was determined to ensure the perpetrators of the crime are apprehended and made to face justice.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the governor assured residents that no community in the state would be neglected in the ongoing efforts to restore peace and security.
Alia also prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the painful loss.
“Do not lose hope. My administration is working closely with security agencies and community leaders to strengthen protection around vulnerable areas.
“We will never waver until our people are safe and can return to their fields without fear,” he said.
