The ancient city of Oyo came alive on Sunday as political leaders and traditional rulers gathered at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, for the installation of new high-ranking chiefs.

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, arrived at the palace alongside his wife, Layal, ahead of his installation as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland.

According to information available, the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title loosely means “the beloved child” or “one who is dear to the hearts of the Yoruba people.” The title is also seen as a symbol of responsibility in preserving Yoruba values, unity and cultural heritage.

Also in Oyo for the ceremony is the senator representing Zamfara West and former governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’Aziz Yari. He arrived with a delegation of northern senators and political associates.

Yari is expected to receive the Obaloyin of Yorubaland title during the same ceremony.

Speaking earlier on the meaning of the Obaloyin title, the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, said it represents “love, compassion, justice, and a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.”

Palace sources explained that both chieftaincy titles come with responsibilities, including promoting Yoruba culture, advising the Alaafin, strengthening unity among the people, and supporting education and social welfare.

Videos shared on social media showed that preparations at the palace were completed, with several prominent figures already in attendance. Among those seen were former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, lawmakers, and many traditional rulers and chiefs from across the country.

Activities are expected to continue at the Alaafin’s palace as the installation ceremonies formally take place.
