The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, has strongly condemned what he described as the misuse of tradition and culture in the state.
Archibong raised concerns over disturbing incidents, including a masked individual attacking a citizen and an online video showing Princess Udoito summoning Governor Umo Eno before a deity of Eket. In the clip, Udoito was dressed in tight black clothes with raffia tied around her ankle and waist, holding a local gin bottle while performing rituals before a tree.
Speaking during a visit to the Traditional Rulers Council in Uyo on Wednesday, the Commissioner stressed that while the government respects culture, it will not allow it to become a weapon for intimidation.
“While the state government is not against culture, it will not condone harmful practices against the people in its name,” Archibong stated.
He appealed to traditional rulers to take firm steps in curbing such acts within their communities. According to him, the traditional institution remains the bedrock of peace and order and must not be twisted for violence.
The Commissioner also called for stronger support from the monarchs for Governor Umo Eno’s administration, saying the state’s ARISE agenda requires collaboration from every sector.
“This support for the governor has been remarkable, and I’m sure it will continue. We must support him in all ramifications, 360 degrees,” he said.
Archibong assured the royal fathers that their efforts were deeply valued. “I appreciate the royal fathers for their work, and I know the governor does not take their contributions for granted,” he added.
Reflecting on his time as a Council Chairman, Archibong acknowledged the challenges traditional rulers face and thanked them for their commitment to stability.
On civic duties, he urged them to mobilise residents for the ongoing voter registration, describing their influence as key to ensuring fair political representation.
He also reminded them of the state’s anniversary celebration on September 23, which he said would honour the traditional institution. He urged the monarchs to give full cooperation, framing the event as proof of government’s respect for royalty.
