The Senate president, GodsWill Akpabio, has joined the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a global organisation of national parliaments that promotes peace and democracy.

This is the first time a Nigerian has been elected into the committee since 1964, according to a statement by his media aide, Anietie Ekong.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded in 1889 and has 179 country members. It aims to foster parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue and to empower parliaments and parliamentarians to address the various challenges facing the world.

Akpabio secured delegates’ votes from different countries at the 147th IPU Assembly held in Luanda, Angola, from October 21 to October 27, 2023. The assembly was hosted by the National Assembly of Angola.

A statement by the Special Assistant (Media/Communication) to the Senate President, Anietie Ekong, said, “Senator Akpabio, was overwhelmingly voted for by delegates across the world to emerge as an Executive Committee member of the parliamentary union with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland for a three-year mandate”

“The union, in the week-long Assembly, deliberated upon important issues affecting nations across the world and considered actions to strengthen trust between people and governance structures, to make public institutions more effective, accountable and representative and to better equip parliaments to address the multiple interconnected geopolitical, economic and environmental crises facing the world.”

The statement said that Akpabio will serve a three-year term in the committee and will contribute to the deliberations and decisions of the union on important issues affecting nations across the world.
