Three South Sudanese models, Abeny Nhial, Monica Majak, and Akon Changkou, have concluded an eight-day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Climbing Africa’s tallest mountain standing at 5,895 metres, is often associated with extreme cold, physical exhaustion, and pushing human limits.

It was a journey marked by healing, shared strength, and a powerful sense of sisterhood.

The trio, all known for their presence in the fashion world, took on the challenge together and completed the climb successfully, turning a demanding expedition into a celebration of resilience and unity.

The experience was far from glamorous. Over the course of the trek, they endured freezing nights, minimal comforts, and thin air that made every step more difficult. Yet, amidst the hardships, they found beauty—breathtaking sunrises, stunning landscapes, and moments of laughter and reflection.

Abeny Nhial captured the emotional depth of the experience in a heartfelt Instagram post:
“Kilimanjaro was the hardest and most challenging thing I’ve ever done (and I’m not even being dramatic). I literally threw up 10 minutes into summit day, but aye… I still made it. This was so much more than a hike. It was healing, breathtaking, and filled my heart in ways I never expected.”

Monica Majak, who made history as the youngest South Sudanese woman to summit Kilimanjaro, highlighted the broader significance of the climb:
“History madeee! Youngest South Sudanese to ever summit Kilimanjaro with my soul sisters. Eight days, no showers, freezing nights — but our strength puts our country on the map and on TOPPPP of Africa. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Akon Changkou reflected on the mental and emotional toll of the journey, sharing her honest perspective on the experience:
“The hardest thing I’ve ever done mentally, physically & emotionally. So surreal…”

Their social media posts provide a vivid visual record of the expedition—from early checkpoints filled with excitement to the harsh conditions near the summit, and finally, the emotional high of reaching the top.

Beyond the physical achievement, what stands out is the depth of the bond they shared and the statement they made. These women—often seen on runways and magazine covers—revealed another side of themselves: one defined by grit, emotional depth, and an unshakable sense of purpose.
