Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced plans to issue an executive order to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal.

This was revealed during the launch of new waste management equipment for the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency in Itu Local Government Area on Thursday.

Speaking at the event, Governor Eno highlighted the importance of maintaining Akwa Ibom’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s cleanest states. He condemned the improper disposal of waste, urging residents to uphold cleanliness.

“Akwa Ibom people are known for their cleanliness, and we must ensure it stays that way. We cannot allow the practice of dumping waste indiscriminately to continue,” he said.

To encourage environmental responsibility, the governor announced plans to reward the cleanest local government area by May 29, 2025. He also called on local councils to work closely with the Waste Management Agency to ensure proper waste disposal across the state.

The governor assured residents of continued progress on state projects and urged young people to take advantage of job opportunities created through these initiatives, especially during and after the festive season.

The Chairman of AKSEPWMA, Prince Ikim, praised the governor’s commitment to keeping the state clean and pledged to support his vision.

National Coordinator of Clean Up Nigeria Limited, Mr. Ene Baba-Owo, commended the governor’s efforts and encouraged the agency to sustain the drive for environmental cleanliness.

The newly acquired waste management equipment includes five waste compacting trucks, four swing arm waste trucks, one pull-up waste truck with a crane mechanism, fifty 6,000-litre dumpsters, and six 12,000-litre dumpsters.
