The Actors Guild of Nigeria has confirmed that its newly elected national president, Abubakar Yakubu, was involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of a child in Surulere, Lagos.
Former AGN president Emeka Rollas announced the development in a statement on Thursday, revealing that the incident occurred on Tuesday, December 9, after Yakubu’s vehicle reportedly suffered a sudden mechanical brake failure.
Rollas explained that Yakubu was driving through Surulere when he lost control of the car, leading to a collision with a mother and her young child.
The child was pronounced dead, while the mother sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Rollas noted that Yakubu remained at the accident scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement officials and emergency responders.
He described the AGN president-elect as a “law-abiding citizen” who did not flee despite the commotion that followed.
According to him, the AGN leadership, together with Yakubu, has visited the family to offer support and condolences during what he called an “unimaginably painful moment.”
In an uncommon show of understanding, the bereaved family acknowledged that the incident resulted from an unexpected mechanical malfunction, not intentional wrongdoing. Rollas stated: “The matter has been resolved amicably with the family, with a shared understanding that this was a tragic accident with no party at intentional fault.” He added that the family demonstrated “remarkable grace and humanity,” and urged the public to respect their privacy as they mourn.
Rollas further disclosed that Yakubu is physically unharmed but deeply shaken by the tragedy. He called on the public and stakeholders in the film industry to show empathy rather than engage in speculation, stressing that accidents can happen to anyone. He said: “Accidents are painful reminders of life’s fragility and are no respecter of age, status, tribe, or creed.”
The AGN appealed to the public to steer clear of divisive remarks and instead offer prayers for the grieving family and the recovering mother.
