The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has expressed satisfaction with the conviction of Simon Ekpa, a key figure in the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, by a Finnish court.
In a statement issued on Monday, Fagbemi described the verdict as a significant step in holding Ekpa accountable for what he termed heinous acts committed against Nigerians, particularly in the South-East region.
“We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court,” Fagbemi stated.
“His conviction for the charges of terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the Southeast.”
The Justice Minister noted that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the case and will take appropriate action once the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court’s judgment is received and thoroughly examined.
“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgment of the court,” he said.
Fagbemi also commended the Finnish authorities for their cooperation and commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in tackling insecurity, expressing hope for continued international collaboration in the fight against terrorism.
“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration,” he added.
