A major fuel tanker explosion has caused severe traffic disruption on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, sending thick black smoke into the air and affecting several vehicles near the accident scene.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning at the NASFAT U-Turn axis along the Lagos-bound lane according to Channels News. Witnesses reported seeing flames shooting high into the sky as the tanker carrying petroleum products exploded after overturning.

Ogun State traffic and safety agencies confirmed the emergency, with rescue teams from Federal Road Safety Corps and fire service rushing to the scene.

“We have our teams on ground managing the situation, but cannot confirm any casualties yet,” said FRSC Education Officer Florence Okpe. “Motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency reported serious traffic congestion, diverting Lagos-bound vehicles through alternative routes including Christ Embassy camp.

“TRACE, FRSC and police officers are on site controlling traffic,” said TRACE spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi. “Fire services are working to put out the blaze which has affected nearby vehicles.”

The explosion comes barely 24 hours after a similar tanker fire in Ibadan paralyzed activities. Safety experts continue calling for improved roadworthiness standards for tankers and better emergency response systems on Nigerian highways.

As of press time, the inferno was still raging with emergency workers battling to contain it. Commuters face long delays with the expressway completely blocked at the accident scene.
