The Super Eagles secured a 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau in the latest Group A match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The lone goal came from an own goal by Opa Sangante, who inadvertently diverted Moses Simon’s cross into his own net during the first half at the Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.
Moses Simon’s precise cross from the left wing, intended for Osimhen at the back post, prompted Sangante’s intervention, resulting in the own goal in the 37th minute.
Despite a slight suggestion that the ball might have gone out of play, VAR review confirmed the goal’s validity.
With this win, the Super Eagles have secured a spot in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria finished second in Group A, trailing behind Equatorial Guinea, who emerged as the group leaders by defeating Ivory Coast in the concurrent match.
Sangante’s own goal proved to be the decisive factor in Nigeria’s advancement.
As of now, Nigeria occupies the second position in the group standings with 7 points, tied with Equatorial Guinea. However, Equatorial Guinea holds the top spot based on goal difference.
