AFCON: No shame losing to Nigeria, says Guinea Bissau Pele

Published

Guinea-Bissau midfielder, Judilson Mamadu Tuncará Gomes, known as ‘Pele’, has said that his side has no shame in losing to a continental powerhouse like Nigeria.

A victory to the Djurtus would have seen them qualify as one of the four best 3rd placed teams but the Super Eagles sent them packing with a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Sadiq Umar opened the scoring before William Troost-Ekong completed the 2-0 victory and despite a lengthy VAR review before the second goal was awarded, Nigeria took maximum points from the group stage for the first time since 2006.

Augustine Eguavoen’s men saw off seven-time champions, Egypt, Sudan and the Guineans to enter the round of 16 as Group D winners ahead of the Pharaohs.

Reacting to the missed opportunity, Pele admitted that his side were disappointed to be leaving Cameroon in the first round.

Pele told Complete Sports, “We are disappointed to be going home this early, but I don’t think there is any shame in losing to a big side like Nigeria.

“Playing at the AFCON has been a remarkable experience for us and we can take a lot of positives from the three games we played here.

“We hope to qualify for the next edition in the Ivory Coast and hopefully put up a better performance.”
