The National Association of Nigerian Students has issued a strong warning to South Africans amidst reports of threats directed at Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali over his performance in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement signed by Ekundina Elvis, the Senate President of NANS, the association expressed deep concern over the alleged threats aimed at Nwabali, who currently plays for Chippa United, a football club based in South Africa.
While the threats have yet to be officially confirmed, football analysts speculate that some South Africans are disgruntled with Nwabali’s role in preventing their team from advancing to the finals of the tournament.
Idah Peterside, a former Super Eagles star, shed light on the threats during an interview on Channels Television, revealing that certain fans had cautioned Nwabali against returning to Chippa United in South Africa following the conclusion of AFCON.
Responding to the situation, NANS urged South Africans to desist from targeting Nwabali, cautioning that any harm inflicted upon the goalkeeper could lead to severe consequences, including the potential closure of South African businesses and interests in Nigeria.
“A South African finger on Nwabali will see the beginning of shutting down of all South African businesses and interests in Nigeria.
”If Nwabali is stopped from returning to his club, we shall also stop South Africans from all benefits from Nigeria.”
“We strongly warn South Africans against any form of threat or harm towards Stanley Nwabali. Such actions will not be taken lightly,” Elvis emphasized in the statement.
He further underscored the importance of sportsmanship, stating, “Football should foster friendship and unity, not animosity. Nigeria stands for fair play and mutual respect in the spirit of sporting competition.”
NANS reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to promoting peace and harmony within the African continent and called for a collective effort to uphold these values in all aspects of international relations.
