African powerhouse, Ghana, have been eliminated from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations by debutants Comoros.

The newcomers defeated the three-time African champions 3-2 at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on Tuesday night to boost their own chances of a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Ghana came into the game with one point against the newbies who have suffered two straight defeats in their opening Group C matches but it was The Coelacanths who drew the first blood.

Ben El Fardou gave Comoros an early lead after just four minutes into the first half after an assist from I. Djoudja.

Ghana’s troubles were compounded in the 25th minute when André Ayew received a red which appeared to be too harsh after a collision with Comoros goalkeeper, Ben Boina, who was immediately substituted after the clash.

Ayew slid to a Kamaldeen Sulemana rebound but caught Boina in the process and was sent off after the VAR advised the ref to look at the incident through the pitch-side monitor.

The Al Sadd player was unfortunate to be sent off for the collision that didn’t appear to be reckless on his part but the ref’s decision stood.

Ahmed Mogni made the most of the one-man advantage by scoring Comoros’ second goal in the 61st minute, leaving Ghana with a mountain to climb.

But the game took an interesting twist three minutes later when Richmond Boakye handed the Ghanaians a lifeline to make it 2-1.

Alexander Djiku sent the Black Stars’ fans wild when he netted a 77th-minute equaliser to throw the game wide open.

But Comoros rallied back with five minutes to the end of regular time as Mogni netted the winner to give the newbies their first-ever victory in the competition.
