AFCON: Davido bets N36m on Super Eagles opener

Afrobeats star Davido has shown strong confidence in the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by placing a major bet on Nigeria’s opening group game against Tanzania.

The singer shared a screenshot of his betting slip on his X page on Sunday, revealing that he staked $25,000, estimated at over N36 million, on the match. The bet predicts that both Nigeria and Tanzania will score, with a possible payout of $96,564, valued at about N140 million.

This is not the first time the music star has openly backed the national team with his money. Before Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualifier against Gabon, Davido had earlier staked $10,000, about N15 million, on a Nigerian win with both teams to score. That match ended in defeat for the Super Eagles, but the loss did not stop him from backing the team again.

Nigeria will face the Taifa Stars of Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23, at the Complex Sportif de Fes in Morocco, as the Super Eagles begin their AFCON 2025 campaign.

The Super Eagles, who are three-time African champions, are heading into the match as favourites after finishing second in the last AFCON tournament.

However, confidence around the team has been cautious following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which has reduced expectations among fans.

Despite this, Nigeria still holds a strong advantage on paper. The Super Eagles are ranked 38th in the latest FIFA rankings, while Tanzania are placed 112th. Tanzania have also never beaten Nigeria in a competitive match.

With fans and celebrities like Davido publicly backing the team, attention will be on Fez as the Super Eagles aim to start their AFCON 2025 journey on a winning note.
