Silas Katompa Mvumpa played a pivotal role as DR Congo secured a well-deserved point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Morocco in Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The match, held under sweltering conditions in San-Pedro, witnessed the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists taking the lead early on when Achraf Hakimi headed home from a corner delivered by Hakim Ziyech in the sixth minute.

Despite Morocco’s early advantage, DR Congo had an opportunity to level the score when Cedric Bakambu took a penalty.

However, Bakambu’s attempt hit the post after VAR deemed Selim Amallah guilty of a handling offense. Undeterred, the underdogs persisted, and their efforts paid off when Silas Katompa Mvumpa found the net on the 76th minute, capitalizing on an assist from fellow substitute Meschack Elia.

Following the draw, Morocco tops Group F with four points, having previously secured a 3-0 victory over Tanzania in their opening match. DR Congo now holds two points, having drawn 1-1 with Zambia in their tournament opener.

Morocco will aim to secure their group leadership by facing Zambia in their upcoming match on Wednesday, while DR Congo remains in contention for a last-16 spot.

DR Congo will conclude their group stage against Tanzania, and their performance in these remaining matches will determine their advancement in the Africa Cup of Nations.
