AFCON: CAF releases Super Eagles’ 41-man provisional list
The Confederation of African Football has revealed the provisional lists of teams set to participate in the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January. Captain Ahmed Musa is included in the Super Eagles’ 41-man list.
However, the absence of Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who played for Nigeria in the last AFCON in Cameroon, is notable.
Among the players making a return to the squad after some time are William Troost-Ekong, Zaidu Sanusi, and Paul Onuachu.
The provisional list, initially consisting of 41 players, will be trimmed down to 27 players by the January 3, 2024 deadline. This represents an increase of four players from the usual 23-player format.
It is clarified that the registration of the additional players on the final list is optional, not mandatory.
CAF specifies that if a team submits a final squad of between 24 and 27 players, only 23 of them will be eligible for selection in each match during the tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in Ivorian cities, including Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
