President and Chief Executive Officer of the African Development Studies Centre, Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, has criticised the spread of unverified health claims about Finance Minister Wale Edun, urging the media and public to act responsibly.

In a statement released on Thursday, Sir Oluwafemi said he was disturbed by recent reports alleging that the minister was “unable to move his hands and knees,” describing the claims as “outright falsehoods with no medical proof.”

Citing information from the minister’s family, he confirmed that Mr Edun is only undergoing routine medical checks and is recovering well.

“It is medically irresponsible to declare without evidence that his motor functions are compromised,” Sir Oluwafemi said.

He called on Nigerians to protect and respect public servants who dedicate their efforts to national progress.

“Minister Edun is a seasoned technocrat. Whether one agrees with his policies or not, his service deserves respect, not fabricated stories meant to damage confidence in our economic leadership,” he stated.

Sir Oluwafemi, a knight, said he would continue to defend truth and integrity in public life. “As a knight, I cannot remain silent when lies threaten individuals and our institutions,” he said.

He urged journalists, social media users, and political figures to show compassion when discussing the health of others.

“Illness is not a political tool or a chance for sensationalism,” he said. “Behind every headline is a human being who deserves dignity and privacy.”

He warned those who exploit health issues for political gain to “reflect on their humanity,” saying such actions show a lack of empathy.

“Today it is someone else; tomorrow it could be you or someone you love,” he added.

Sir Oluwafemi concluded by calling for a collective commitment to truth and compassion. “We are all human. We all fall sick and need time to heal. Let us treat each other with that basic dignity.”
