Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has taken a commanding lead in Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, winning 19 of the 30 local government areas whose results have been announced so far.

His closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, secured 11 local governments, according to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

A total of 15 political parties participated in the election, but only the Accord Party and the APC made significant impact across the state.

The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, came a distant third with 14,989 votes.

As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not yet officially declared the winner. The State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, is expected to make the final declaration at the INEC state collation centre in Osogbo.

With all 30 local government results now announced, all eyes are on INEC for the final declaration. Governor Adeleke currently leads with a significant margin, but the official winner will only be known after the returning officer makes the formal announcement.

The election was generally peaceful, although there were isolated reports of vote-buying and other electoral malpractices in some areas.
