Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Adekunle Gold, is grappling with disappointment after his cherished football club, Manchester United, lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

The emotional match, played on Wednesday, May 21 in Bilbao, Spain, saw Tottenham claim a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a 42nd-minute goal from Brennan Johnson.

The win marked the end of Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought, leaving United fans—including Adekunle Gold—devastated.

The singer took to his official X (formerly Twitter) page to vent his frustrations. Known for his deep loyalty to Manchester United, Adekunle Gold shared a string of emotionally charged posts that drew attention from fans and followers.

In one of the tweets, he wrote, “I need space to cry. Please respect my privacy at this time. Thanks.”

His heartbreak didn’t stop there. In a follow-up tweet, he exclaimed, “STOP CALLING MY PHONE!!!!” and added, “My people, Tamper mercy with Justice. I am ashamed! What the f*** is this??? Forgive me @youngskales @Zlatan_Ibile. Amori, I believed in you!”

The online community reacted swiftly. While some fans sympathised with the artist, others seized the opportunity for playful trolling.

The match itself saw Manchester United struggle after conceding the lone goal from a swift counter-attack started by Pape Matar Sarr and finished by Johnson.

Despite late efforts from Amad Diallo and Garnacho, a critical goal-line clearance by Van de Ven sealed United’s fate.

Supporters of both the singer and the football club weighed in.

@DavymartinCE0 quipped: “At least this one go motivate you to release album. Make Simi do the crying for you. Her voice sweet.”

Another user, @collinsumeh042, added: “You deserve better. How much more suffering before you finally leave this club behind?”

Meanwhile, @sposhbaba mocked: “Loool Privacy ko Primacy ni Alaye, come and face your shame now. Be a man.”

Further reactions included @Maxieebby saying, “After you travelled all the way from Sokoto to go and watch the game I understand,” and @ayinla_thompson adding humorously: “Na TOTTENHAM wear WHITE, Na MAN U wear RED, See better beating.”
@NnannaSamu62282 shared a more reflective take: “Football will always teach us important things… Man U fans thought it was theirs before kickoff, but football no be chor chor chor. Take heart nwanne m.”

In a twist of irony, some fans reminded the singer of his earlier mockery of rapper Zlatan Ibile. Following Barcelona’s Champions League exit, Adekunle had trolled Zlatan, a die-hard Barcelona supporter, who had predicted a victory over Inter Milan and even wore a Barcelona jersey with the caption, “UCL FINAL 2011.”

As football continues to stir deep emotions, Adekunle Gold’s social media posts reflect just how deeply fans can feel the pain—or joy—of the game.
